6 July 2017 Prison suicides are soaring. More inmates should be trained to prevent this, as I was writes Jonathan Aitken for the Guardian

The soaring suicide and self-harming rates in our prisons are reaching crisis levels. Last week’s National Audit Office report confirmed this: in 2016 there were a record 120 self-inflicted prison deaths – a doubling of the number within four years – and more than 40,000 self-harm incidents in English and Welsh prisons. Overstretched staff are simply unable to cope with the extra suicide prevention measures that are needed.

19 February 2017 SKY NEWS  Jonathan reacts to the news about instant pay rise for prison guards...

The announcement came as ex-prisoner and former cabinet minister Jonathan Aitken blamed "swingeing and unjustified" cuts for the prisons crisis.

He praised Ms Truss for facing up to the "grim realities" of the situation after predecessors Michael Gove, Chris Grayling and Ken Clarke "agreed to" cuts that they "should never have allowed".

Mr Aitken, who was jailed for perjury in 1999, told BBC Radio 4: "There are no votes in prisons or prisoners' rights or prison welfare so, of course, cuts are easy to make there without causing voter disquiet.

"We need a bit of a re-think about how public expenditure priorities are decided and we're not getting that right at the moment."

14 February 2017 Ruth Gledhill Editor of Christian Today reports: Jonathan Aitken, the former Conservative Cabinet minister who served time in jail for perjury, has accused the prison service of being guilty of 'institutional secularism'.

"We need a bit of a re-think about how public expenditure priorities are decided and we’re not getting that right at the moment".
